Abstract
This study aimed at the development of a questionnaire to investigate the discomfort rating and pain relieving behavior in high heel wearers and to assess any clinical implication. A sample of 317 subjects received the questionnaire. The internal consistency was 0.78-0.85 and the test-retest reliability was 0.85-0.90 (p<0.0l), indicating the reliability of the questionnaire was adequate. With regard to the factor structure, a 5-factor modality was confirmed, made up of four domains for the comfort rating including ”foot discomfort”, ”biomechanical effect”, ”balance and safety” and ”effect on the daily living” and a final domain, ”measures to relieve pain”. Among these domains, ”foot discomfort” demonstrated the highest score and ”effect on the daily life” ranked second, indicating that these two domains address stronger discomfort factors among high heel wearers. Among the items in ”measures to relive pain”, specifically ”decreasing wearing time” and ”preparedness to wear alternative shoes” were most frequently observed. The subjects who had seen a doctor gave higher scores for ”foot discomfort”, ”biomechanical effect”, ”balance and safety” and ”measures to relieve the pain”. As the questionnaire can be performed in a short time and demonstrates adequate reliability and validity, it will help an understanding of the discomfort and pain relieving behavior among high heel wearers. It will also be possible for clinicians to use this questionnaire to follow up the effectiveness of any treatment.
