Abstract
Sciatica due to herniated disc or degenerative disc disease is one of the most common problems in modern society. Management of the pain and disability with supine intermittent or sustained pelvic traction has long been used. However, some patients with severe back and referred leg pain cannot tolerate traction in a supine position. In this study, we applied sustained prone position pelvic traction to 14 patients with severe back and referred leg pain who were unable to tolerate supine position traction. Magnetic resonance imaging and electromyography studies revealed positive findings. Sustained prone position pelvic traction was set with one third of the patients’ body weight for 15 minutes per session, 4 times per day. Most patients had a successful outcome. Which included marked reductions in the Visual Analogue Scale, an increased angle of straight leg raising and improvements in mobility. We conclude that prone pelvic traction may be an alternative management strategy for sciatica.
