The Development of Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation A New Private General Hospital

Abstract
The set-up and development of the rehabilitation epartment in a new, middle-sized hospital is an interesting subject and worth to be studied. We prospectively investigated the inpatients and out-patients who had received ehabilitation therapy during the one year period from the opening of Shin Kong Wu Ho-Su Memorial Hospital, Sep 3, 1992, to Aug 31, 1993. The patients' data were analyzed by three major categories: (1) the sources of the patients, (2) the diagnosis of the diseases (ICD-10), (3) the factors relating to the growth of the rehabilitation department. The results showed: (1) mostof our patients came via the introduction of the public transmission (40.20%), lived close to the hospital (69.87%), had Labor or Farmers' Health Insurance (75.83%), and had liberal vocation (43.64%), (2) about the disease classification, cerebral vascular accidents (28.24%) were the most common diseases in inpatients; arthritis (19.58%) and back pain (15-56%) were the most frequent diseases in outpatients, (3) good administration, evening OPD and evening physical therapy service, health insurance, taking the advantage of public transmission, good cooperation and communication with other departments, and high quality of physiatrists and therapists were the important factors relating to the growth of the rehabilitation department.
