Abstract
A preliminary study was designed to assess the health maintenance and care needs of the elderly attending the Government Employee Combined Clinic in Tainan City. Interviews using structured questionnaire were conducted on persons aged 65 years and over from April 9 to April 21 1990.There were 483 persons included. Two hundred and ninety three subjects (60.7%) were men. The mean age of the studied population was 72 years, ranging from 65 to 87 years. The mean duration of education was 9.0 years. The results revealed that the most common chronic health problem was hypertension (39.1%). followed by heart disease, rheumatism, diabetes mellitus. and gastrointestinal disorder. Fifty three point six per cent of the subjects had the habit of regular exercise. The leisure activities were mainly static in nature. Twelve per cent of the subjects received regular physical check-up. Among them, male and the higher educated were predominant (p < 0.001). Fifty three point two per cent of the subjects lived with their children. There were 48.3% of the subjects lived on retired pension or past savings. Ninety two point three per cent of the subjects were attended by relatives during illness. Eighty three point four per cent of the elderly studied were fully independent in carrying out activities of daily living. Those who were willing to accept the idea of institutionalization took a percentage of 50.9. Among them. male. the higher educated, and those who was living alone or with spouse were in majority (p < 0.001). The study implied that setting up geriatric hospital to promote regular health check-up and early diagnosis and treatment of diseases was in the first peace of geriatric health care. It was also important to encourage the elderly to increase their social interaction. The government should strengthen the system of retired pension so that the livings of the elderly could be assured. It was of the equal importance that the government planned, as soon as possible, the geriatric apartment and community and encouraged the building of private nursing home to meet the future need.
