Abstract

The purposes of this study were to quantitatively evaluate the muscular strength and spasticity of stroke patients and to find out the significant relationships between different functions and torques of muscle groups in mode and speed specificity of isokinetic evaluation.This study was to use isokinetic hydralic drive machine (GGT-3000, The Medizin-Electronic System, GmbH, West Germany) to measure quantitatively muscular activities of elbow and knee flexor and extensor muscular groups of 53 patients. Affected side was measured in passive motion at speed 10°/s, 120°/s and concentric contraction and eccentric contraction motion at speed 60°/s. Sound side was measured in concentric and eccentric contraction motion at speed 60°/s.Unpaired t-test and Nonparametric ANOVA were used to analyze all the datum. From this study, we concluded that quantitative evaluation of affected side elbow flexor concentric contraction torque at the speed 60°/s was highly suggested as an adequate method to determining the severity of spasticity of the stroke patients. The results also showed an important application for therapy and target torques to aim for in strengthening specific muscle groups for particular functions.
