Abstract
Twenty persons suffered from cruciate ligment rupture of unilateral knee were Participated in our electromyographic studies from Oct. 1988 to July 1989. All subjects were found to have disuse muscle atrophy of vastus medialis after operation and cast fixation for about 3 weeksThe clinical study was divided into two steps. 1. To evaluate the change in parameters of compound muscle action potentials (CMAPs) obtained by stimulating the femoral nerve and recording both in atrophic and sound vastus medialis muscles. 2. To evaluate the change in parameters of automatic decomposition electromyography (ADEMG) by maximum voluntary contraction in vastus medialis with muscle atrophy. The results of this study are: 1.Muscle atrophy in vastus medialis shows a decrease of amplitude and surface area of CMAP. 2.Disuse atrophy in vastus medialis muscle shows an increase of duration of CMAP. 3.There is a positive correlation between surface area and amplitude of CMAP. 4.Decrease of motor unit number, amplitude and firing rate at lesion side in ADEMG study. The conclusion was made that the parameters of CMAP and ADEMG can be used as objective basises for evaluating the electrophysiological functions of the disuse muscle atrophy.
